Cluasa Capaill ar an Rí

Cluasa Capaill ar an Rí is a picture book telling the story of Labhraí Loingseach, the king with horse’s ears. It is an international folktale, told and retold across the world in different versions, for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. This version is illustrated by Shona Shirley Macdonald, written by Bridget Bhreathnach in Irish, and published by Futa Fata in Spideál, Ireland 2021.

Winner of the Gradam Réics Carló 2021 (Children's Book of the Year in Irish), Shortlisted for a Children's Books Ireland Award 2022 and LAI Award 2023, and the first children's book in Irish to be published as a World Book Day book, March 2022.
I love the magical realism of myths and folklore, and there is such a wealth of stories in Irish myth and folklore especially, so it was fantastic to be able to illustrate this book.  I love Bridget's version too because it focuses on accepting yourself and being honest about who you are.
 The illustrations were created with the help of several models, and I am hugely grateful to them for their time and for allowing me to use their likeness to create these characters.
